Youth Voices Take Center Stage in Colorado Governor’s Race
Colorado’s next governor will make decisions that shape the future of education, housing, healthcare, economic opportunity and civic life for years to come. On June 13, young people from across the state will have a unique opportunity to bring those issues directly to the candidates seeking the state’s highest office.
The Youth Focused Governor’s Candidate Forum, organized by a coalition of youth-serving and community organizations, will bring together gubernatorial candidates and young Coloradans for an interactive, Jeopardy-style conversation designed to make politics more accessible, engaging and responsive to the concerns of the next generation.
Hosted by Colorado Black Women for Political Action, Young Invincibles, Mi Familia Vota, YouthRoots, Rocky Mountain Partnership, Ednium: The Alumni Collective, New Era Colorado, YAASPA, Compound of Compassion, Wells of Happiness Foundation and additional partners, the event aims to create a space where young people can move beyond campaign slogans and hear directly from candidates on the issues that matter most to them.
Confirmed participants currently include Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, with Republican candidates Barbara Kirkmeyer and Victor Marx invited to participate.
Unlike a traditional candidate forum, the event will feature an interactive format that encourages dialogue and audience engagement while highlighting topics such as public education, affordability, healthcare access, workforce development and housing.
Organizers hope the event will empower young voters and future leaders by demonstrating that their voices and experiences belong at the center of Colorado’s political conversations.
The evening will also provide opportunities for networking, connecting with community organizations and learning about resources available to young people throughout the state. Attendees can enjoy complimentary food and meet representatives from participating organizations. There will also be a dedicated student section designed to encourage youth participation.
As Colorado prepares for another pivotal election cycle, organizers say the forum was created to ensure that young people understand the power they have to influence the future of their communities.
