Federal agent fatally shoots woman during ICE operation in Minneapolis

A federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a 37-year-old woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, on Wednesday morning in south Minneapolis. The shooting took place during a large-scale immigration enforcement operation, sparking fierce controversy between local officials and federal authorities over details surrounding the incident.

The Fatal Encounter

The shooting occurred in a residential neighborhood near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue. ICE and other Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel were conducting what the agency has described as part of its largest immigration crackdown to date.

Federal officials, including DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, characterized the Good’s actions as an attempt to ram officers with her vehicle in what they labeled an act of “domestic terrorism,” insisting the agent fired in self-defense.

However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly disputed the federal account, saying video of the encounter he reviewed does not support the government’s narrative. “They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense,” Frey said. “Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bullshit.”

In a separate statement posted on social media, Frey condemned the broader federal operation and insisted it has made the community less safe. “The presence of federal immigration enforcement agents is causing chaos in our city,” he wrote, demanding that “ICE leave the city immediately.”

Frey also reiterated his support for immigrant and refugee communities amid mounting tensions. “We stand by our immigrant and refugee communities – know that you have our full support,” he said in a city news release

Minneapolis police said preliminary information indicates that Good was in her vehicle and blocking a roadway when a federal officer approached on foot and shots were fired. Her vehicle subsequently crashed, several hundred feet from where the hots were fired. Police added there is nothing to indicate she was the subject of any law enforcement investigation.

The incident led to protests near the scene, where demonstrators decried the federal presence and chanted for ICE’s removal.

The FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating the shooting, which marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Minneapolis city officials and the federal government over immigration enforcement tactics.

Local leaders, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar and lawmakers around the country have echoed calls for a thorough and transparent investigation into Good’s death.
