DENVER COMMUNITY FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS MAY 21 AT HISTORIC ELITCH THEATRE

600 attendees expected for screening and discussion of “Truth Be Told”

The historic Elitch Theatre in West Highland will host the second annual Denver Community Film Festival on Thursday, May 21, bringing together more than 600 residents for an evening of film, conversation and community engagement.

Presented by Denver Inc., the event will feature a screening of the documentary “Truth Be Told,” followed by a discussion with the audience and prominent Colorado journalists.

“Denver Inc. is all about building community among the more than 60 registered neighborhood organizations across the city,” says Keith Meyer of Denver Inc. “After the overwhelming success of our first film festival, we’re excited to build on that momentum and create an even bigger event this year.”

The festival is supported by 60 residential neighborhood organizations (RNOs) and community partners, including Bucket List Community News, the Colorado News Collaborative and the University of Denver.

The evening will include a pre-film reception, the documentary screening and a post-film discussion featuring journalists from outlets such as The Colorado Sun and others.

Directed by Brian Malone, “Truth Be Told” takes viewers inside newsrooms across Colorado, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how local journalists report, verify information, and connect with their communities. The film is part of the statewide “Free Press, Free Country” initiative, which highlights the importance of a free and independent press and the First Amendment.

The 49-minute documentary is a fly-on-the-wall approach and features journalists including 9NEWS reporter Marshall Zelinger, Tami Graham of KSUT Tribal Radio, Bazi Kanani of Colorado Public Radio, 9NEWS visual storyteller Byron Reed, Jason Blevins of The Colorado Sun and Mike Wiggins and Erin McIntyre, publishers of the Ouray County Plaindealer.

“Local news informs and engages our communities, but there is a lot of misinformation today,” says Vicky Collins, publisher of Bucket List Community News. “Truth Be Told helps our neighbors better understand the care and responsibility that go into producing trustworthy local journalism to help audiences be more discerning.”

Doors open at 5:00 p.m., and the program will conclude by 9:00 p.m. Admission is $10, with 20% of proceeds supporting community news in Denver. A short film about South Broadway will also be screened.

The Elitch Theatre is located at 4600 West 37th Place in Denver.
